SAN ANTONIO — Emily Perez placed second in her season debut and she helped lead the Roadrunners women's cross country team to a runner-up performance at Friday's UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic.
The junior from Mission covered the 5,000-meter trail in 18:35.9 and was a little less than five seconds behind individual champion Sanie Raines of Texas, who won the meet in 18:31.2.
Stephanie Wangui was one spot behind her teammate in third with her time of 18:57.3 and that was her second consecutive top-three performance to open the season.
Kerstin Sheehan (20:41.0/11th), Lauren Haney (20:52.1/12th) and Brianna Mendiola (21:17.2/13th) rounded out the Roadrunners' scoring contingent.
Texas successfully defended its team title with 23 points, while UTSA scored 35 to place second among Division I squads.
The Roadrunners will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Ken Garland Invitational in Denton.
