UTSA to compete at St. Mary's Quad Invitational, Rice Invitational this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s tennis team will split its squad this weekend and compete at both the St. Mary’s Quad Invitational in San Antonio and the Rice Invitational in Houston.

The Roadrunners will send Christian Carrillo, Mark Ginting, David Kelleher and Harley Pearson to face St. Mary’s at the Rattlers’ Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex at 2 p.m. on Friday and to the Northside I.S.D. Annemarie Tennis Center to play Our Lady of the Lake at 8:30 a.m. and Incarnate Word at 1:30 p.m. the followng day. The teams will use a format of four singles and a pair of doubles matches in each contest.

Meanwhile, Diogo Casa, Yannick Junger, Tito Moreiras, Jacob Rother, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman will make the trek east on IH-10 to compete at the Rice Invitational on Friday and Sunday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. That group will face players from Arizona, Baylor, Lamar, Nebraska, Nicholls, Rice, SMU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UIW and UT Arlington in singles and doubles draws.

UTSA posted three singles victories last weekend in its season-opening event, the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open in Corpus Christi. Rother defeated Josip Smoljan of UIW in the main singles draw round of 32, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, before being eliminated by Guillaume Rauseo of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Matt Mussenden and Ginting overcame losses in the opening round with straight-set wins in the first round of the consolation bracket.
