CORPUS CHRISTI — Miriam Rosell Canudas won the singles title and also teamed up with Jacobea Junger to advance to the doubles championship match to lead UTSA at the season-opening Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open this past weekend.
The sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, cruised through the singles draw by winning all four of her matches in straight sets. After receiving an opening-round bye, she opened the tournament on Friday with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Lamar's Anne Spengler and advanced to the final with wins against UT Arlington's Astrid Gehre (6-3, 6-3) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Judit Vives (6-3, 6-4) the following day. Rosell Canudas then defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Celia Rodriguez by scores of 7-5, 6-1 to capture the tournament crown on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Junger claimed the singles consolation title on the final day of the event with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Texas-Pan American's Mariana Ranzahuer. The junior from Stuttgart, Germany, bounced back from Friday's opening-round loss in the main draw with four victories, all of which came in straight sets. She downed Lamar's Hanna Elfving (6-2, 6-2), UT Arlington's Verena Scott (5-1, retired) and Lamar's Katya Lapayeva (6-3, 6-1) to advance to Sunday's final.
The pair nearly made it a clean sweep for the Roadrunners, but it was unable to overcome Gehre and Augustina Serio in Sunday's doubles final, as the UT Arlington duo won, 8-5. Junger and Rosell Canudas, who teamed up to win a team-high 12 matches at the top spot in the lineup last spring, downed UT Arlington's Christine Foote and Verena Scott (8-7 [7-4]) and A&M-Corpus Christi's Chelsea Horan and Vives (8-4) before playing for the championship.
UTSA will be back in action this weekend at the St. Mary's Quad Invitational. The local two-day tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday.
