CORPUS CHRISTI — UTSA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi played to a scoreless draw on Friday night at Dugan Stadium in a match that was called with 63 seconds remaining in the second overtime due to lightning.
The Roadrunners (3-2-1) outshot the Islanders (1-2-2), 22-7, but neither team could get on the board. It was the first scoreless tie for UTSA since a double whitewashing against Colorado College on Oct. 20, 2013.
Happy Orere-Amadu led the offense with four shots, while Anka Grotle, Kauwela Neal and Taylor Wingerden each finished with three attempts on the net.
Meanwhile, the UTSA defense did its job and held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to just four shots on goal. Katherine Tesno saw the majority of the action in goal and logged one save and Emma Makela tallied three stops in nearly 34 minutes.
The Roadrunners put the pressure on the Islanders with 11 shots in the first half, all while holding the home squad without one attempt.
Despite the disparity, UTSA could not find the back of the net thanks to four saves from Megan Delany, who finished with 10 stops on the night.
Makela replaced Tesno in goal to start the second period for the Roadrunners, but was given a red card in the 79th minute after recording her three saves.
UTSA would play the final 40 minutes with just 10 players on the field, but held the Islanders scoreless for its second shutout of the campaign.
With just 63 ticks left in the second overtime, the match was halted due to lightning in the area and eventually, the contest was called a draw.
The Roadrunners will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they travel to San Marcos for a matchup with I-35 rival Texas State (4-1-1).
