Jeters named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday

IRVING — Three days after helping lead one the most dominating performances in program history, Jens Jeters was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

The senior linebacker from Simi Valley, Calif., led a suffocating defensive effort for UTSA in Friday's season-opening 27-7 victory at Houston. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder registered five tackles, recovered a first-quarter fumble (one of a program-record six takeaways) and later forced a fumble in the final stanza. The Roadrunners surrendered just 208 yards, including minus-26 on the ground, and also forced nine three-and-outs, including eight in the Cougars' first nine drives of the contest.

Western Kentucky quarterback Brandon Doughty and FIU punt returner Richard Leonard were named Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.

UTSA will play for the second time in just seven days on Thursday night when it opens its home slate against Arizona (1-0). The second all-time meeting between the two programs and first-ever home night game in school annals is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. in front of a national television audience on FOX Sports 1.
