UTSA gets past Sam Houston State on Sunday night, 2-1

HUNTSVILLE — Senior Anissa Munson’s header off a corner kick in the 61st minute broke a 1-all tie and proved to be the difference, as UTSA defeated Sam Houston State, 2-1, on Sunday night at Pritchett Field.

The win gave the Roadrunners their second 2-0 start in school history and first since the 2010 campaign. Munson also assisted on UTSA’s other goal, which came off the foot of senior Kaytee O’Brien for her second winner of the season.

Meanwhile, goalies Katherine Tesno and Emma Makela combined for three saves, as the UTSA defense limited the Bearkats (0-2) to just four shots on goal.

O’Brien picked up right where she left off on Friday and supplied the visitors with an early lead.

In the 30th minute, Munson put a header on goal that was pushed aside by Sam Houston State keeper Kylie Hambleton, but O’Brien was there collect the rebound and find the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

That’s where the score stood until the 57th minute, when Allie Johnson knotted the score with a goal against Makela, who came on in relief of Tesno.

Just four minutes later, Munson ran to the back post on a corner kick from junior Charlotte Husoe and her header slipped past Hambleton for the second game-winner of her career.

The UTSA defense clamped down and limited the Bearkats to just three shots in the final 29 minutes to secure the victory.

The Roadrunners will return to the pitch at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, when they travel north for a matchup at Kansas (2-0).
