FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — UTSA wrapped up competition at this weekend's NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds on Saturday, but the Roadrunners were unable to add to their list of qualifiers to the national semifinals.
Leadng the way on the final day of the meet was discus thrower Richard Garrett Jr. and the 1,600-meter relay of Joshua Smith, Keyunta Hayes, Jurmarcus Shelvin and Christopher Hall, who both just missed berths in the next round with 14th-place performances.
Garrett Jr., who advanced to the semis in the shot put on Thursday, recorded a measurement of 182-7 (55.65m) on his fifth attempt of the day. The senior from Garland qualfied for the quarterfinals with his opening toss of 179-4 (54.66m), which was the 16th-best mark in the first round.
Meanwhile, the mile relay quartet passed the baton in a season-best 3:07.79, but Kansas grabbed the 12th and final qualifying berth in 3:07.16.
Other UTSA athletes in action on Saturday included the 400m relay team of Aaron LeJeune, Nate Brunette, Darryl Wyrick and James Johnson (19th/40.66) and triple jumper Ronson Small (44th/46-5 ½/14.16m).
The NCAA Championships will take place from June 11-14 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Andrew Akens and Garrett Jr. will represent the Roadrunners in the shot put at 7:30 p.m. (CT) on the opening day of competition, while Hayes will race in the 400m hurdles semifinals at 8:15 p.m. (CT) the same day.
