UTSA gets back on winning track with 4-2 victory against Lamar

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA got a breakout performance offensively pounding out 11 hits, including an inside-the-park home run by Mike Warren, to win the first game of a two-game midweek series against Lamar on Tuesday night, 4-2.

Warren was one of three hitters with multi-hit games for the Roadrunners (28-17). He was joined by John Welborn and RJ Perucki.

Welborn provided the defensive highlight of the night in the fourth inning in right field by snaring a sinking liner down the line with runners on first and third and one out. After completing the diving catch the senior threw back to first to double off the runner and keep the game scoreless.

UTSA plated the first two runs of the ball game in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single to left by Warren and a single by Jesse Baker a batter later. Perucki scored from second on the single by Baker after the ball was fumbled by left fielder Kevin Santana.

Jacoby Middleton tied the game at two apiece in the next half inning for Lamar (26-18) with a two-run single through the middle of the infield.

Welborn was able to regain the lead for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the sixth on a double down the left field line scoring John Bormann.

In the bottom of the seventh, Warren added the insurance inside-the-park home run to give UTSA a 4-2 advantage. The senior drove a ball to the wall in left field that Sanchez retreated on and collided with the wall. Sanchez stayed down on the play and Warren completed the round tripper before the center fielder could range over for the loose ball. It was Warren’s third home run of the spring.

Wesley Cox earned his first save of the season after striking out three Cardinals and allowing just one hit over the final three innings.

The midweek series will conclude at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
