HOUSTON — Houston Baptist scored four runs in the second inning and UTSA never recovered in a 5-2 setback on Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
HBU starter Ross Kennell retired the first nine UTSA batters he faced and allowed two earned runs to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Jordan McCoy and Zach Nehrir each went 3-for-4 to lead four Huskies that recorded multi-hit games.
Thomas Clay got the scoring started in the second inning with a two-run double with two outs C.J. Jarvis followed a batter later with a two-run single into right center to give the Huskies an early 4-0 edge.
An inning later, the Huskies (18-19) stretched the lead to 5-0 a run-scoring single by Nehrir.
The Roadrunners (26-15) continued to give themselves chances to come back, but they were unable to capitalize. UTSA hit into three double plays and left eight runners on base in its third consecutive setback.
In the top of the fifth, John Bormann doubled down the left-field line to score Tony Ramirez from first. Ramirez advanced to third on the double and then came home on a throwing error by McCoy in left field. Two batters later, C.J. Pickering lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Bormann and narrow the gap to 5-2.
However, Chris Garza, Josh Martinez and Dylan Zarosky each pitched scoreless innings in relief of Kennell to secure the season sweep for the Huskies.
Zarosky picked up his third save of the year.
The Roadrunners will begin a three-game Conference USA home series at 6 p.m. on Friday against Charlotte (11-24-1, 4-13 C-USA).
