IRVING — Richard Garrett Jr. was named Conference USA Athlete of the Week for the second time this spring, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The All-American topped the field of 15 shot putters at last Saturday's UTSA Invitational with his measurement of 64-1 (19.53m), which was just a two-and-a-quarter inches shy of his program record established earlier this season. The Garland native now has won three of his four outings this year and he went on to register a runner-up performance in the discus with his toss of 178-9 (54.48m). The 6-foot, 275-pounder currently ranks sixth in the nation in the shot put (64-3 ¼/19.59m) and leads Conference USA in both the shot and discus (183-9/56.00m).
The Roadrunners now have earned three weekly honors from the league in five weeks this season, as Garrett Jr. was recognized back on March 25 and fellow All-American Keyunta Hayes two weeks later.
UTSA will return to action on Saturday at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight in Houston.
