SAN MARCOS — Texas State scored four runs in the ninth inning to rally from a 6-3 deficit for a 7-6 win against UTSA on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark. The loss snapped UTSA’s three-game winning streak.
Texas State (17-11) took a 1-0 lead in the second on Austin O’Neal’s RBI single only to give up the lead in the next half inning, as UTSA plated two unearned runs to go ahead, 2-1. Mitchell Matulia scored on an error by the Bobcats’ Matt Smith, who was unable to handle a ground ball off the bat of Horacio Correa III. John Welborn scored from third a batter later on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats knotted the game at two in the fourth on a run scoring double play and pushed ahead in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead into the final two innings.
UTSA (19-10) rallied in the eighth, tying the game at three on RJ Perucki’s two-out RBI double into the gap in right center. Mike Warren followed with a go-ahead two-run homer to left to stake the Roadrunners a 5-3 lead. Tony Ramirez capped the four-run eighth when he advanced all the way from first on a single by John Bormann that was misplayed by the right fielder.
Warren’s home run extended his consecutive reached base streak to a career-high 23 games.
Texas State then staged their own furious comeback in the bottom of the ninth by loading the bases with one out. Garrett Mattledge then drove a bases-clearing double to right center off Matt Sims (2-3) to tie the game and Granger Studdard followed with a walk-off single off Wesley Cox to send the Bobcats to their 14th win in the last 16 outings against UTSA.
Boone Mokry earned a no-decision for UTSA after going six innings and allowing two runs with four strikeouts.
UTSA will continue on its five-game road trip on Friday at Tulane (13-14, 5-6 C-USA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
