UTSA opens series with 6-2 victory against Marshall

SAN ANTONIO — John Welborn matched a career high with four hits and Tony Ramirez hit his third home run of the season in support of UTSA starter Brock Hartson and the Roadrunners won the opening game of a three-game series against Marshall on Friday, 6-2.

Hartson (3-1) won his second consecutive decision after tossing 6.2 innings and allowing just an unearned run while striking out four on 103 pitches.

Horacio Correa III gave UTSA (23-11, 9-4 C-USA) a 1-0 lead in the second with a RBI ground out to first that scored Welborn.

Ramirez then led off the bottom of the fourth by taking an inside fastball over the wall in right field to push the edge to 2-0.

Marshall starting pitcher Michael Taylor held the Roadrunners in check over the next few innings until John Bormann lined a double just inside the right-field line in the fifth, which scored Mike Warren and Ramirez and extend the advantage to 4-0. The hit extended Bormann’s team-high hitting streak to seven games.

In the next half inning, the Thundering Herd (13-19, 7-8 C-USA) took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Roadrunners to score its first run of the game on a single to right by Andrew Dundon. Dundon finished the evening 2-for-5 to join three other Marshall players with multiple hits.

UTSA answered back in the seventh with Ramirez’s second RBI of the game on a double down the left-field line that plated Warren. A batter later, Bormann lifted a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Jesse Baker to put the Birds ahead, 6-1.

Corey Bird added a RBI single following a UTSA error in the top of the ninth to keep the Herd’s fleeting hopes alive, but Logan Onda shut the door fielding a comebacker to the mound to end the game. Onda pitched the final 2.1 innings en route to his fifth save of the season.

Warren finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored to extend his consecutive reached-base streak to 28 games.

The series will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
