Big plays highlight UTSA's first spring scrimmage on Saturday

SPRING BRANCH — Tucker Carter passed for 247 yards and three touchdowns to highlight a day of big plays at UTSA's first spring scrimmage, which took place on Saturday at Smithson Valley High School's Ranger Stadium.

Carter a redshirt senior, connected on scoring passes of 42, 36 and 23 yards while completing 12-of-17 passes in split duty with the only other quarterback on the roster, redshirt freshman Austin Robinson, who added 52 yards through the air and a team-high 62 on the ground.

"I saw some really good things out there today from both the offense and the defense," head coach Larry Coker said. "We had a lot of big plays by the offense, we ran to the ball on defense and Sean Ianno showed a really good leg with some long field goals. We did have some penalties that we need to clean up, but, all in all, it was a really good day for us."

Carter found Aaron Grubb all alone down the right sideline for a 42-yard scoring strike to cap a quick three-play, 65-yard opening drive for the first-team offense.

The defense then forced three consecutive punts before Carter again led the first team down the field for a second scoring march. Grubb took an end-around from Carter and scampered seven yards to paydirt for his second TD of the afternoon.

Robinson got the second team offense on the board with a seven-play, 65-yard drive that was capped by a 35-yard field goal by Ianno.

After the defense, which was led with six tackles apiece from Codie Brooks and Dalton Miller, forced back-to-back three-and-outs, Carter found Brandon Armstrong for a 36-yard scoring completion on the first play of the drive.

The defense then came up with three three-and-outs and interceptions by Tevin Broussard and Chase Dahlquist on the next five drives, but the offense went on to score on four of the final five possessions of the scrimmage.

Carter tossed his third TD pass of the day when he connected with Brandon Freeman on a corner route from 23 yards out.

Ianno then tacked on three more field goals, including splitting the uprights from 55 and 53 yards out.

Brooks registered a pair of sacks and Miller added two pass breakups.

The Roadrunners will hold four more spring practices and the fourth annual UTSA Football Fiesta Spring Game presented by HealthTexas is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Alamodome.
