UTSA completes weekend sweep of Louisiana Tech with 6-1 victory

SAN ANTONIO — Jade Smith had two hits and Siera Sproul hit a three-run home run to help lead UTSA to a 6-1 victory against Louisiana Tech on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

With the win, the Roadrunners (11-12, 3-0 C-USA) completed a weekend sweep of the Lady Techsters (8-15, 0-3 C-USA) in their first-ever Conference USA series.

Smith went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and her and Sproul were joined in the hit column by Courtney Buchman, Jori Fox, Madison Kinley and Taylor Oberg.

Kacy Freeze (6-5) earned the win in relief, as she did not allow a hit and struck out three in three and two-thirds scoreless innings. Chelsea Parker fanned a pair and gave up one run on five hits in the start.

LA Tech got on the board in the top of the first when Kristen Miles reached on an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on an infield base hit by Bianca Duran.

The Roadrunners took the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a costly Lady Techsters error. Oberg and Smith reached on base hits and with two outs, both scored when a popup by Megan Low was dropped by the second baseman.

UTSA added four insurance runs in the fourth.  Buchman drove in pinch runner Jolene Graham, who was on for Kinley. With two down and two on, Sproul sent a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center for her third home run of the season and a 6-1 advantage.

Duran (3-10) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits in four frames.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Wednesday, March 12, when they travel to Huntsville to face former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State (8-9) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
