SAN ANTONIO — Mike Warren's two-out single up the middle with runners on the corners in the ninth gave UTSA a come-from-behind 6-5, walk-off victory against Texas-Pan American on Wednesday at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners' third consecutive victory improved their season record to 9-4, while the Broncs, who held a 5-1 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth, dropped to 6-7 on the year.
RJ Perucki got the game-winning rally started with a two-out walk and he moved to third when Horacio Correa III singled down the right-field line. That set the stage for Warren, who lined Blake English's 0-1 offering through the box to finish off the Roadrunners' comeback.
Matt Sims (1-1) earned the win with a pair of strikeouts in a perfect ninth, while English (1-1), who surrendered three runs on six hits over the final three frames, was tagged with loss.
UTPA touched up Douglas Sefcik III for a three-spot in the opening frame on four hits and an error.
Back-to-back one-out triples by Bryan Ramirez and Dillon Engelhart started the damage and Englehart crossed the plate one batter later on Alberto Morales' grounder to shortstop. Correa III was unable to field it cleanly and that kept the momentum going. Following a visit to the mound by second-year head coach Jason Marshall, Jacob Huckabay singled to right center and Brandon Roush followed with an RBI base hit to right, which brought home Morales, giving the visitors an early 3-0 advantage.
UTSA got on the board in the third when Jesse Baker followed a John Welborn lead-off double with a single to left. Both knocks extended the pair's hitting streaks to 12 games.
After the teams traded two-spots in the sixth, the Roadrunners drew even one frame later on Warren's two-run single up the middle.
Boone Mokry, who entered the game with the bases loaded and just one out in the first, kept the Birds close with the best performance of his brief UTSA career. The right-hander from Pleasanton retired 14 of the first 15 hitters he faced, including five by strikeout. Mokry ended up fanning a half dozen in his 6.1 innings of work and he allowed two runs (one earned) on just one hit in the 81-pitch (52 strikes) relief outing.
Warren finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Baker had two hits. Grant Gibbs added a two-run, pinch-hit double in the sixth.
Alex Howe had a pair of safeties to lead the Broncs offense, while starting pitcher Alex Henson scattered seven hits but surrendered just one run in his 4.2 innings.
UTSA will wrap up its nine-game home stand this weekend when it hosts Florida Atlantic (10-3) in a three-game series. Friday's Conference USA opener for both teams is scheduled for 6 p.m.
