SAN ANTONIO — UTSA closed out a weekend three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech on Sunday with a 6-3 victory at Roadrunner Field.
John Welborn went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and RJ Perucki finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, as UTSA (19-9, 6-3 C-USA) scored four times in the seventh to break open a 2-2 tie.
Perucki drove in a run in both the first and third innings to stake the Roadrunners to a 2-0 lead. In the opening frame, the senior third baseman delivered an RBI groundout to third to score Welborn and in the third knocked a single into left to plate Welborn for a second time.
Bre’Shon Kimbell got Louisiana Tech (9-17, 3-9 C-USA) on the scoreboard in the fifth with an RBI single to left center and Colby Johnson scored Taylor Burch with a sacrifice fly to right a batter later to tie the game at two.
Welborn sparked the Roadrunners’ fourth multi-run inning of the series in the seventh with a leadoff homer to left. It was Welborn’s first round tripper of the season. Perucki then added his third RBI of the game with a single through the left side of the infield to push the lead to 4-2. After Tony Ramirez was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, John Bormann drove a two-run double into the gap in left centerfield to double the UTSA lead to 6-2.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 6-3 in the top of the eighth on Steven Blanchard’s double to eight center but Matt Sims recorded the final four outs of the game for his fifth save of the season.
Wesley Cox (6-1) earned the victory after entering in relief of start Justin Anderson. Cox allowed one earned run through 2.2 innings. Anderson was dealt a no-decision despite allowing one earned run over five innings.
UTSA’s 19-9 start to the season is the Roadrunners’ second best start in program history through 28 games. The 1994 team started 21-7 and won the Southland Conference Tournament to advance to the program's first-ever NCAA Regional.
The Roadrunners will travel to I-35 rival Texas State (16-11) on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest that will be broadcast on ESPN3.
