Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shuts down UTSA on Tuesday, 6-1

SAN ANTONIO — Texas A&M-Corpus Christi avenged an early-season loss to UTSA by downing the Roadrunners, 6-1, on Tuesday night at Roadrunner Field.

The Islanders (12-15) leadoff trio of Brandon Tierney, Jordan Lee, and Kyle Danford combined to go 8-of-13 with four runs scored and three RBIs, while starting pitcher Dalton D’Spain earned his first win of the season after allowing just one run over five innings of work.

A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out of the gate with a big first inning, scoring three runs and chasing UTSA starter Boone Mokry. Tyler Ware singled through the right side to bring home Tierney, who led off the game with a single to left. Dominic Lopez drew a bases loaded walk two batters later and Zack Gibson followed with a RBI ground out to give the Islanders a 3-0 advantage.

Danford extended the lead to four in the second after scoring Tierney from second on a chopper through the middle of the infield.

UTSA (16-9) got its only run of the game in the fourth when Jesse Baker powered his fourth home run of the season out to left to lead off the inning, which cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Islanders bullpen took over from there, as four relievers combined to toss the final four innings without allowing a run and limiting the UTSA offense to just two hits.

Lee and Danford added back-to-back RBI singles in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Baker was the only Roadrunner with multiple hits, as he finished the contest 2-for-4. Mike Warren reached based three times on a walk and two hit by pitches to extend his consecutive reached base streak to a career-high 19 games.

UTSA will return to Conference USA play on at 6 p.m. on Friday night when it begins a three-game home series with Louisiana Tech (9-14, 3-6 C-USA).
