UTSA wraps up home slate on Saturday with pair of victories

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, as it defeated Texas-Pan American, 5-1, and NCAA Division II No. 29 St. Mary's, 7-0, at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The Roadrunners improved to 8-11 with the doubleheader sweep in their final home appearance of the year.

In the opener, UTSA made quick work of a shorthanded UTPA squad. The Broncs (3-12) did not have six players, so no match was contested at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

The No. 33-ranked doubles team of Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman scored an 8-3 win against Ricardo Hopker and Chetan Panditi at No. 1 and Yannick Junger and Boburjon Kamiljanov teamed up for an 8-4 decision over Juan Cruz Soria and Alejandro Sanoja on the second court.

In singles, Stillman ran his record to 14-2 on the year with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2, while Junger, Rubio and Diogo Casa also registered wins to help UTSA snap a two-match losing streak.

In the afternoon matchup with crosstown foe St. Mary's, the Roadrunners turned in their first sweep of the season.

Rubio and Stillman moved their ledger to 14-3 after beating Michael Maciel and Raickovic Philipp, 8-4, on court one. Junger and Kamiljanov posted an 8-5 at No. 2 and Brand and Casa were 8-6 winners at No. 3.

The Birds made quick work of the Rattlers (6-6) in singles, sweeping five of the six matches.

Stillman was a 6-2, 6-2 victor over Philipp at No. 2 in improving to 15-2 this season, while Rubio recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win against Jared Fellows on the third court to run his record to 13-6.

Junger defeated Maciel, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 and Casa rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win at four. Kolby Kilgo beat Matt Banner, 6-4, 6-3, at the fifth position and Matt Mussenden scored a 7-6 (10-5), 6-3 victory over Brien Galon at No. 6.

The Roadrunners will travel to Beaumont to face Lamar at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 27.
