UTSA clips Southern Mississippi on Saturday to even weekend series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — UTSA scored four runs in the eighth inning Saturday afternoon to rally past Southern Mississippi, 4-1, and even this weekend's three-game series at Pete Taylor Park.

John Welborn finished the afternoon tilt 3-for-5 with a run scored and Wesley Cox threw two innings of scoreless relief to earn his fourth victory of the season.

The Golden Eagles (11-12, 3-2 C-USA) plated the first run of the game on a Dylan Budreaux sacrifice fly in the fourth and used an outstanding performance on the mound from Conor Fisk to maintain the lead through seven innings.

The Roadrunners (16-7, 3-2 C-USA) finally broke through in the eighth when Horacio Correa III reached on a fielding error by the Golden Eagles shortstop. Correa III was credited with an RBI, as Logan Kinder scored from third to even the contest at one. Jesse Baker added a single a batter later and RJ Perucki followed with a RBI single to right to give UTSA its first lead of the series. With the bases loaded, Mike Warren walked on five pitches to bring in Correa III and Tony Ramirez drilled a run-scoring single to right to extend the lead to 4-1.

Logan Onda allowed one baserunner over the final two frames and struck out two for his third save of the season.

The teams will conclude the weekend series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
