SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to Conference USA play at 6 p.m. on Friday in the beginning of a weekend three-game series at Southern Mississippi.
UTSA (15-6, 2-1 C-USA) went 4-1 during a five-game reprieve from conference action last week by downing then-No. 18 Sam Houston State in Huntsville on Tuesday before taking three out of four games from 2013 Ivy League Champion Columbia in the Alamo City.
Through 21 games, UTSA is off to the second-best start in program history. Only the 1993 Roadrunners had a better 21-game stretch to open the season at 17-4. The ’93 team went on to win a school-record 39 games and the Southland Conference Tournament title to earn UTSA’s first-ever NCAA Regional berth.
Meanwhile, after standing idle during the opening weekend of C-USA play, Southern Miss (10-11, 2-1 C-USA) got its league schedule underway with a series victory against Marshall last weekend. Matt Durst, Mason Robbins and Michael Sterling have combined for 62 of the team’s 167 hits this season to lead the Golden Eagles at the plate.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs and UTSA’s first time playing a team from the state of Mississippi. The series will conclude with single games on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
