SAN ANTONIO — Columbia snapped UTSA’s four-game winning streak and avoided a series sweep with a 4-2 victory on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
Kevin Roy (1-1) stymied UTSA (15-6) through 7.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two on a blustery day in the Alamo City.
The wind came into play on a few of the game’s pivotal moments beginning in the third inning when Tony Ramirez dropped a two-out fly ball to left and saw Robb Peller capitalize with a two-run single a batter later to put the Lions ahead, 2-1.
UTSA tied the game at two in the fifth on a fielding error by Columbia shortstop Aaron Silbar that allowed Ramirez to score from third.
Jordan Serena scored the go-ahead run for the Lions (5-7) in the seventh on a wild pitch by Cody Brannon. Following a walk to load the bases, Logan Boyher lifted a high pop up toward second base and was called out due to the infield fly rule, but the Roadrunners were unable to handle the ball and Silbar was able to tag from third and put Columbia ahead, 4-2.
The Roadrunners threatened to make a comeback in the ninth, but they were undone by a strikeout/caught stealing double play.
UTSA will return to Conference USA play next weekend when it travels to Southern Mississippi (9-11, 2-1) for a three-game series. Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
