UTSA to resume Conference USA play this weekend at North Texas

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to Conference USA action this weekend when it travels to Denton for a three-game series with fellow league newcomer North Texas.

In a matchup of the only two squads with perfect 3-0 C-USA marks, the Roadrunners (11-15, 3-0 C-USA) and Mean Green (17-7, 3-0 C-USA) will play a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday (please note time change due to forecasted inclement weather) before concluding the set with a 1 p.m. tilt the following day.

In addition to keeping its unblemished league mark, UTSA will look to snap a three-game losing streak this week. The Birds dropped a pair at Sam Houston State on Wednesday before falling at Stephen F. Austin the following day. Megan Low added to her league-leading home run total, which now stands at 11, in the losses with a round-tripper in each of her last two games. The junior from Spring leads the Roadrunners offense with a .342 batting average, five doubles and 22 RBIs. In the circle, Nicole Merrill continues to pace the staff with a 4-5 mark and 2.77 ERA, while Kacy Freeze’s 61 strikeouts are tops on the squad.

North Texas swept Middle Tennessee last weekend to open C-USA play. This week, the Mean Green dropped a pair of games against Texas before a walk-off win over Oklahoma State. Daniella Hoff leads the team, which is batting .302, with a .420 average at the plate to go along with nine doubles and 23 RBIs. Brooke Foster, who is one of five players hitting at least .313, owns a .381 average and is tops on the squad with five home runs. Ashley Kirk has seen the majority of the action in the circle and the senior is 11-3 with 100 strikeouts and a 2.52 ERA on the campaign.

The all-time series between the teams is tied 5-5 after UTSA swept a doubleheader against North Texas by scores of 7-0 and 2-0 last season. The Roadrunners are 0-3 all-time in Denton.
