HUNTSVILLE — John Bormann belted two home runs and matched a career-high with five RBIs and UTSA defeated No. 18 Sam Houston State, 9-2, on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
The Roadrunners (12-5) got the scoring started in a hurry in the opening inning when John Welborn roped a leadoff double to right field and advanced to third on an error by Hayden Simerly. Jesse Baker quickly capitalized with an RBI single and Horacio Correa III drove in Baker two batters later with a double to left for a 2-0 UTSA lead.
Back-to-back singles to lead off the third by RJ Perucki and Correa III set the table for Bormann. The junior from Seguin, who was recently named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, connected on his first home run of the season driving a two-out, 3-2 pitch out to left to give the Roadrunners a 5-0 advantage.
Bormann continued his breakout performance at the plate in the fifth with another deep drive to left that plated Logan Kinder while extending the lead to 7-0.
After the Bearkats (13-4) scored an unearned run in the fifth, Perucki laced a run-scoring single to left, which pushed the lead to 8-1.
Each team pushed across a run in the seventh, but, by then, UTSA was firmly in command.
UTSA starter Boone Mokry kept the nationally-ranked Bearkats at bay, going 4.1 innings without allowing an earned run. Logan Onda (2-1) entered threw the final 4.2 frames out of the bullpen to pick up the victory.
Bormann became the first UTSA player with a multi-home run game since Daniel Rockett did so since April 29, 2012, against Central Arkansas.
Eight different Roadrunners registered a hit in the game with Baker and Tony Ramirez posting three apiece.
UTSA (12-5) will return home this weekend to host Columbia (4-4). Friday's opener of a four-game series is scheduled for 6 p.m.
