CORPUS CHRISTI — Nolan Trabanino allowed one earned run over 7.2 innings of work to improve to 2-0, as UTSA won its second consecutive game at this weekend's Kleberg Bank College Classic, 7-1, on Saturday against BYU.
Trabanino kept the Cougars (1-7) off the scoreboard until the eighth inning, allowing just six hits and striking out two without issuing a walk to pick up his second victory in as many starts this season.
UTSA (5-1) used a balanced offensive attack to build a 6-0 lead through four innings. That included a four-run third, which broke the game open.
Tony Ramirez connected on his second home run of the season with two outs in the second to open the scoring barrage for UTSA.
After Trabanino induced three consecutive ground outs to open the third, John Bormann led off the home half of the third with a double down the left-field line. Bormann was driven in two batters later on a RJ Perucki single through the left side. With runners on first and second, Jesse Baker sent a three-run drive over the left field fence to extend the Birds' lead to 5-0.
John Welborn tacked on an unearned run in the fourth when he scored from second on a throwing error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Horacio Correa III.
BYU got a two-out RBI single in the eighth, but Bormann’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning kept the UTSA lead at six, 7-1.
In total, seven different players scored runs for the Roadrunners.
UTSA will conclude tournament play at noon on Sunday against No. 19 TCU (4-1).
