East Carolina edges UTSA on Friday afternoon, 4-3

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The No. 16-ranked doubles team of Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman remained unbeaten on the season, but it was not enough in a 4-3 setback at East Carolina on Friday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Center.

Rubio and Stillman downed Fredric Lehfeldt and Damien Brenard at No. 2 by an 8-2 count to run their record to a perfect 7-0, but the Pirates (10-3) picked up victories on the other two courts to take doubles point.

ECU grabbed a 2-0 advantage after No. 13 Joran Vliegen beat Yannick Junger, 6-2, 7-5 (7-4) at No. 1 singles.

The Roadrunners (3-5) responded by posting wins at Nos. 3 and 2. Rubio swept Nicolas Soriano, 6-2, 6-2, and Diogo Casa held off Mario Martinez, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, to knot the score at 2-2.

The Pirates reclaimed the lead with a 6-0, 6-2 victory by Brenard against Fabian Brand at No. 5, but UTSA made it 3-3 when Stillman dispatched Lehfeldt at No. 4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, sending the contest to the final match.

There, Colin Roller rallied to beat Boburjon Kamiljanov in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match for ECU in what was the Roadrunners' fourth consecutive match decided by a 4-3 score.

The Roadrunners will continue their road swing at Old Dominion (6-2) at noon (CT) on Saturday.
