SAN ANTONIO — UTEP held off UTSA by a score of 4-3 on Sunday to pick up its first victory of the season. The start of the match was delayed by an hour due to inclement weather and played in blustery conditions that rolled into the Alamo City overnight.
The Roadrunners (1-4) fell into an early hole when they only were able to win one of the three doubles contests. Lina Hallgren and Isabelle Jonsson were victorious for the second time in as many days when they defeated Matilda Rose Tench and Daphne Visscher, 6-1, at the No. 3 position.
The Miners (1-2) were able to hold off UTSA with singles wins at the Nos. 1, 4 and 5 spots.
Jonsson finished off her perfect weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Marie LeBlond on the third court, while Miriam Rosell Canudas handed Davina Meza a 6-2, 6-1 setback at the No. 2 position. The Roadrunners' other victory of the day came at No. 6 where Irene Gandara Gonzalez got past Tench in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).
UTSA will conclude its three-match home stand on Thursday, Feb. 6, when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-1) at 3 p.m.
