BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — UTSA upset No. 69 Samford, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (3-3) took an early 1-0 advantage after grabbing the doubles point from the Bulldogs (1-4).
The 16th-ranked tandem of Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman improved to 5-0 on the year with a 6-4 victory against Liam Sullivan and Henry Moore at No. 2. Yannick Junger and Diogo Casa also scored a 6-4 win, downing Elliot Barnwell and Trey Carter at the top spot to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, UTSA posted wins at Nos. 2 and 3 before Stillman clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-5 (7-1) decision at No. 4.
Junger beat Fares Kilani at No. 2, 6-5 (7-4), 6-3, and Rubio took care of Austin Akers at the third spot, 6-5 (7-4), 6-4, to help put the Birds one decision away from taking the match. Stillman, a junior from Harlingen, provided the decisive win to help UTSA pull off the upset.
The Roadrunners will face UAB at 11 a.m. on Sunday to conclude the road trip.
