Roadrunners top McNeese State, 5-2, on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA won the doubles point and followed that up with four singles victories en route to a 5-2 victory against former Southland Conference foe McNeese State on Saturday. The Roadrunners (1-3), who were playing their first home match of the spring, picked up their first victory of the season.

Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell Canudas made quick work of Vivien Borely and Anastasia Surkova at the top doubles spot, 6-1, while Lina Hallgren and Isabelle Jonsson clinched the early 1-0 lead with a 6-2 win on the third court against Julia Kral and Andreea Nenu.

The Cowgirls (1-1) made things interesting with singles triumphs at the top two positions, but UTSA held off rallies in three of the remaining four contests to come out on top.

Jonsson outlasted Kral at the No. 3 slot, 6-2, 4-6, 12-10, while Nicole Karaklis rallied for a 5-7, 6-1, 10-4 victory against Borbley at the fourth court. Hallgren also went the distance at the No. 5 slot, getting past Surkova, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 10-4. Meanwhile, Irene Gandara Gonzalez was the only Roadrunner to win in straight sets, as she downed Nenu by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 at the sixth position.

UTSA will host UTEP (0-1) at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
