Adams named Conference USA Player of the Year on Wednesday

IRVING — McKenzie Adams was named the Conference USA Player of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday.

Adams, the circuit's Preseason Player of the Year and national leader in kills per set, was one of only two unanimous selections to the all-conference teams on Tuesday after earning seven C-USA Player of the Week Awards (six offensive/one defensive) during her senior campaign. She was the first player in program history and only the fifth in C-USA annals to be named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week on Nov. 5.

The Player of the Year Award is Adams’ fourth superlative award in four different conferences, a feat that is believed to be a first in NCAA history.

After being tabbed as the 2010 Atlantic Coast Freshman of the Year at Virginia, she earned 2011 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore transfer and 2012 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year last season.

The Schertz native has averaged a league-best 5.69 kills and 6.16 points per set in addition to ranking 14th with 3.69 digs per frame. Adams currently ranks 10th among active Division I players in career kills (1,562) and winners per set (4.04) and she also is one of only 10 active players with at least 1,500 kills and 1,000 digs.

UTSA (21-7) will begin C-USA Tournament play at noon on Friday against the winner of Thursday's first-round match between Southern Mississippi and UTEP.
