Roadrunners in 15th place after opening day of Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Led by a pair of 74s from Taylor Newlin and Libby Thomas, UTSA is tied for 15th place after the opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.

Newlin, a senior from Frisco, and Thomas, a freshman from Midland, both toured the 5,897-yard Cherokee Country Club layout in three-over par and are in an eight-way tie for 44th with 36 holes remaining.

Aimee Ponte is one shot behind in a tie for 52nd after carding a 75, while Fabiola Arriaga and Brogan Townend are tied for 62nd (76) and 71st (77), respectively.

The Roadrunners turned in a 299 and are tied with Missouri for 15th, one stroke behind the trio of Notre Dame, Campbell and Rollins. South Carolina leads the field after recording a five-under 279, followed by Arkansas (282), Louisville (283), Tennessee (285) and UCF (286).

The second round is scheduled to get underway with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CT) on Saturday.
