Bormann added to Johnny Bench Award Watch List

WICHITA, Kan. — Sophomore catcher John Bormann was added to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced on Wednesday.

The award annually recognizes the top collegiate catcher based on athletic ability, sportsmanship, team leadership and character. Florida's Mike Zunino was presented with the honor last season.

The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, which will be announced on May 16. The winner of the award will be unveiled at the 16th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27.

Bormann is hitting .297 and is tied for the team lead with 10 doubles. The Seguin native also has a home run and 22 RBIs in addition to recording 14 multiple-hit contests. In fact, he tied together a 10-game hitting streak from March 8-23 earlier this season.

Behind the plate, the 6-foot, 200-pounder has caught all 385.2 innings for the Roadrunners and he leads the nation with 12 pickoffs, including four at second base. Bormann also has thrown out 54.7 percent of potential base stealers (23-of-42), which ranks sixth in the country.

UTSA (24-20, 8-9 WAC) returns to play on Friday when it opens a three-game home series against I-35 rival Texas State (21-23, 11-7 WAC). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
