Good homer sends UTSA past Dallas Baptist in 13 innings, 5-4

DALLAS — Riley Good hit a solo home run with two outs in the 13th and UTSA knocked off Dallas Baptist, 5-4, in Friday's series opener at Horner Ballpark.

The Roadrunners (23-18, 7-8 WAC) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to notch their 12th come-from-behind victory of the season.

Good pulled an 0-1 slider from Patriots reliever Michael Smith over the wall in right field to break a 4-4 tie.

Matt Sims (3-0), who entered the contest with two outs in the ninth, allowed a leadoff single to Michael Miller in the bottom of the frame, but he retired the next three to clinch the win. Sims allowed only one hit, walked two and struck out four in 4.1 stanzas.

Sims and Jordan Pacheco combined to hold Dallas Baptist scoreless over the final eight panels.

Meanwhile, Smith (5-5) suffered the loss after giving up one run on four hits in five innings of relief. The right-hander walked one and struck out six.

The Roadrunners pounded out 15 hits on the night.

Good was 3-for-6 with two RBIs to lead the way, while Mike Warren went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

The Patriots (21-21, 8-8 WAC) managed 10 hits, but only had two in the final seven innings.

Miller paced the hosts with a 4-for-6 performance that included two doubles and a pair of RBIs.

Dallas Baptist plated three runs against Brock Hartson in the first to jump out to an early lead.

However, the Birds answered with two in the following panel, including one on Good's single through the right side.

UTSA pulled even in the third with John Bormann's single to center.

The Patriots then reclaimed a one-run advantage in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back doubles by Miller and Duncan McAlpine.

Two innings later, Tony Ramirez and Horacio Correa III strung together back-to-back singles with one down. Warren then hit into a fielder's choice, which drove in Ramirez to tie the game at four.

Both clubs went silent for the next seven stanzas until Good's heroics in the 13th.

The set will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Roadrunners will send left-hander Nolan Trabanino (3-2, 4.62 ERA) to the mound, while Dallas Baptist will counter with righty Cy Sneed (2-3, 5.90 ERA).
