Baker powers UTSA past Texas-Pan American on Tuesday, 2-1

EDINBURG — Jesse Baker clubbed a two-run homer in the second inning and UTSA pitching staff made it stand the rest of the way en route to a 2-1 victory at Texas-Pan American on Tuesday.

The Roadrunners (22-18) trailed after the opening frame before Baker launched a first-pitch fastball from Broncs starting pitcher Matt Daniels over the wall in left field for his third round-tripper on the season. Rodney Garza, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, also scored on the play.

Four UTSA pitchers made the one-run lead hold up.

Wesley Cox started the contest and gave up the one run on three hits and two walks to go along with a pair of strikeouts in three innings before giving way to the bullpen.

Michael Kraft (2-5) picked up the win after tossing 2.2 scoreless frames. He allowed two hits, walked three and fanned four. Meanwhile, Logan Onda gave up a hit and a walk in 1.1 stanzas and Matt Sims slammed the door with two scoreless panels to pick up his fourth save of the season.

The Roadrunners collected 11 hits, but they left 10 runners on base.

Horacio Correa III, Riley Good and RJ Perucki each posted two hits apiece and Baker's long ball was the game's lone extra-base hit.

Texas-Pan American (19-18) managed only six singles. Alex Howe was 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the first.

Daniels (0-4) yielded two runs on five hits in four-plus frames. The right-hander walked a pair and struck out four.

UTSA will continue Western Athletic Conference play this weekend at Dallas Baptist (21-20, 8-7 WAC). The three-game series will open at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
