Middle innings propel Texas State past Roadrunners on Tuesday night

SAN MARCOS — Texas State scored in each of the three middle innings, including a three-run sixth, and the Bobcats snapped UTSA's four-game winning streak with a 6-0 victory on Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest at Bobcats Ballpark.

Texas State (5-7) pushed across the go-ahead run in the fourth.

Cody Lovejoy laid down a well-placed bunt along the first-base line and UTSA starting pitcher Nolan Trabanino picked up the ball, wheeled around and threw wildly toward first base, which allowed Lovejoy to move to second. After Garrett Mattlage's ground out to shortstop pushed Lovejay up 90 feet, Andrew Stumph followed with a run-scoring single to center field.

Texas State scored its second run a stanza later, three more in the sixth on Ben McElroy's pinch-hit, three-run double. The final mark came in the eighth on a wild pitch.

The Roadrunners (9-4), who managed just seven singles on the night, stranded eight base runners, including four in scoring position.

Covey Morrow (1-0) picked up the win after tossing 1.1 scoreless frames in relief.

Meanwhile, Trabanino (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over 5.1 innings of work.

UTSA will host Washington State (8-3) in a four-game series at Roadrunner Field this weekend. The first game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday.
