Roadrunners to start 11-game road trip on Wednesday at Houston Baptist

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will begin an 11-game road trip on Wednesday when it takes on Houston Baptist in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

The Roadrunners (11-8), who are coming off a 3-1 week that included their first win against Houston since 2006, rank third in the Western Athletic Conference with a .299 batting average and a 2.41 ERA.

Megan Low paces the offense and ranks second in the league with a .455 batting average, while her .864 slugging percentage and .636 on-base percentage lead the circuit. The Spring native hit .571 last week with a pair of doubles and seven walks, five of which were intentional.

Haylee Staton leads the pitching staff with a 1.62 ERA to go along with her 6-2 record and one save. The Austin native has struck out 44 batters and has two shutouts this season. Meanwhile, Alyssa Vordenbaum evened her record at 3-3 last week with a pair of victories. She recorded a career-high six strikeouts and allowed just two unearned runs in the win at Houston before going 5.1 frames in a victory last Saturday against Sam Houston State.

The Huskies (4-3) will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak on Tuesday when they play a doubleheader at Texas Southern. Houston Baptist opened the season with wins against Southern, Alcorn State and Louisiana Tech before losses to Texas, Houston and the Lady Tigers.

The squad is led by Lauren Schwirtlich, who has started every contest and is hitting .556 with two triples, a home run and four RBIs. Her sister, Kirsten, is batting .381 and paces the Huskies with three homers and 13 RBIs.

Houston Baptist’s four wins are spread among four pitchers. Sarah Shotton has seen the most work in the circle with 17 innings and she has a 2.06 ERA and 17 strikeouts to go along with her 1-1 record.

UTSA leads the all-time series 15-4 despite dropping two of three meetings with the Huskies last season.
