LAFAYETTE, La. — Louisiana-Lafayette completed a three-game series sweep of UTSA with a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,058 fans at Moore Field.
The Ragin' Cajuns (7-1) scored the go-ahead run in the third inning and three pitchers combined to limit the Roadrunners (5-3) to one run on six hits in the finale.
Austin Robichaux (1-0) picked up the victory after hurling six strong frames. The right-hander gave up a run on four hits, walked one and struck out four before giving way to the bullpen.
Ryan Wilson and Matt Hicks combined to yield only one hit the rest of the way, while Hicks earned his third save after forcing Riley Good to ground out to end the game.
Meanwhile, Clint Sharp (0-1) lost despite recording a quality start. The San Antonio native, who started 18 of the 30 batters he faced with a strike, allowed a pair of runs on six hits, walked two and struck out one in 6.2 stanzas.
Louisiana-Lafayette took an early lead in the first.
Seth Harrison was hit by a pitch with two outs and he promptly stole second. Michael Strentz then drove him in on a single through the middle of the infield.
A frame later, UTSA answered with Rodney Garza's two-out double to the right-center field gap, which pushed Horacio Correa III around to score from first base.
However, the Ragin' Cajuns took the lead for good in the third.
Harrison led off with a double and, after moving over to third on a fly out, he scored on Chase Compton's ground out.
Both teams went scoreless in the final six innings, but the Roadrunners threatened in the ninth.
Jesse Baker reached on an error and he was moved to second by Correa III's sacrifice bunt. Garza then grounded out to the Sam Carriere at third base, but Baker was unable to move up. ULL then made the switch to Hicks on the mound. John Welborn laced Hicks' first pitch into left field, but Baker was held at third after the ball was quickly returned to the infield. However, the Birds' comeback attempt fell short when Hicks induced a game-ending grounder off Good's bat.
Harrison was the lone player with two hits for the Ragin' Cajuns, while Daniel Rockett picked up a pair of singles for the Roadrunners.
UTSA will return to the Alamo City to host Texas-Pan American (2-5) on Tuesday, Feb. 26. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
