NEW ORLEANS, La. — Taylor Newlin carded four birdies en route to an opening-round 70 to lead 43rd-ranked UTSA on Sunday at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, which is being played at English Turn Golf & Country Club (par 72/6,105 yards).
The Frisco native started on No. 14 and fired birdies on Nos. 2, 5, 8 and 12 to share the seventh spot on the leaderboard with seven other players, including four ranked among the top 50.
After leading the Roadrunners at last weekend’s Seminole Match-Up, Brogan Townend shot a 74 to tie for 41st.
Meanwhile, Chelsea Bretcher and Paola Valerio tied for 72nd with 77s and Fabiola Arriaga finished the day tied for 77th with a 78.
The Roadrunners shot a 298 to tie with No. 37 Oregon and the duo is one shot ahead of 47th-ranked Ohio State and four shots in front of No. 35 Auburn.
No. 31 Tulane sits atop the team leaderboard with a 282, while the Green Wave’s Emily Penttila fired a five-under 67 to top the individual leaderboard.
The event continues with another 18 holes on Monday.
