ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Katie Bragg won the weight throw with a program-record measurement on Friday and the UTSA women's track & field team stands in second place following seven scored events at this weekend's Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
Bragg tossed the 20-pound implement 62-4 (19.00m) to top the 18-woman field by two feet and that bettered Taelor Wilson previous school mark of 59-1 ½ (18.02m) established at last year's Southland Conference meet. It was the first conference weight throw championship in program annals and UTSA now boasts 56 all-time individual/relay titles.
The Roadrunners, who registered 52 points on the day, trail only I-35 rival Texas State in the team standings. The Bobcats have netted 74 points through the first two days of competition and New Mexico State rounds out the top three with 36.
UTSA made a move up the leaderboard after seeing three of its long jumpers combine for 15 points.
Kayla Hunt earned a silver medal and eight points with a personal-best leap of 18-8 (5.69m), while Laura Oseghae (18-7/5.66m) and Ernestine Cray (18-3 ¾/5.58m) finished fourth and seventh, respectively.
Meanwhile, Whitney Flannel placed third in the high jump with a personal-record clearance of 5-8 ½ (1.74m) and she combined with Chenale Smith, who finished seventh (5-7 ¼/1.71m), for a eight more tallies.
The Roadrunners received another eight in the pole vault following a bronze-medal effort from April Benavidez (11-10 ½/3.62m) and a seventh-place performance by Dinha Callejas (PR 10-10 ¾/3.32m).
Six more points came in the 5,000 meters, as Samantha Fish (fifth) and Isabel Balbontin (seventh) circled the Albuquerque Convention Center banked track 25 times in 18:10.56 and 18:27.25, respectively.
UTSA's final points of the day came in the distance medley relay when the quartet of Nina Herrera, Shantel Swift, Grace Williamson and Alyssa Diaz passed the baton in 12:05.69, which was good for fourth place.
The Roadrunners also sent six athletes into the running finals during preliminary heat competition.
The three-day meet concludes on Saturday.
