Perucki's career night leads UTSA to 19-4 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI — RJ Perucki hit a home run and drove in a career-high seven runs to lead UTSA to a 19-4 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday night at Chapman Field. The Roadrunners (5-0) tied the 2010 team for the best start in program history.

Each player in the starting lineup registered at least one hit, as UTSA, which scored at least one run in the final eight innings, tallied 22 on the night. John Bormann and Horacio Correa III each posted a game-high four hits to pace the Roadrunners, while Perucki and Riley Good both had three.

The Birds received a strong relief pitching performance from Nolan Trabanino, who hurled five scoreless innings and fanned five to improve to 2-0 this season.

UTSA took the early lead after scoring on Jesse Baker's sacrifice fly in the second. An inning later, the Roadrunners scored three times, including Perucki's two-run homer.

The Islanders (3-2) answered with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the third, but UTSA responded with two in the fourth, one in the fifth and four more in the sixth, including a solo round-tripper by Daniel Rockett, to put the game out of reach.

The Birds added eight more runs over the final three stanzas to take a 19-2 lead.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored twice in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Tyler Schnuriger (0-2) was handed the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in three innings.

UTSA will continue its four-game road trip on Friday when it opens a three-game series at Louisiana-Lafayette (4-1). First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
