UTSA to host North Texas in Wednesday doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to the diamond on Wednesday when it hosts North Texas in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Roadrunner Field.

Coming off a 3-2 performance at the UTSA Classic last weekend, the Roadrunners (4-4) will play their final home games in February.

Vivian Tijerina leads the team and is tied for fourth in the Western Athletic Conference with a .474 batting average and the Atascosa native leads the circuit with a 1.105 slugging percentage.

The Roadrunners rank among the league’s best offenses and they trail only New Mexico State in batting average (.337), slugging percentage (.519), home runs (8), RBIs (43) and on-base percentage (.439).

The Mean Green (4-5) come into Wednesday’s twinbill after posting a 1-3 mark at their own Lovelace Invitational. North Texas fell to Oklahoma State, Omaha and Iowa before a 3-2 victory against Dayton in the event’s finale. Danielle Hoff leads the squad with a .318 average, while Karly Williams paces the club with six RBIs.

The Mean Green are hitting .233 as a team, while opponents own a .270 batting average against them. The pitching staff is led by Brittany Simmons, who is 2-1 with a 1.19 ERA. Ashley Kirk has the most starts of any North Texas hurler (four) and is 1-3 with a 4.32 ERA to go along with a team-high 20 strikeouts.

North Texas leads the all-time series, 5-3, including a 14-10 win in the last meeting, which occurred on Feb. 25, 2011, in Denton. UTSA set a program record with six doubles in the contest, led by a record-tying three from Haylee Staton.
