SAN ANTONIO — UTSA remained unbeaten this spring after sweeping a doubleheader from Air Force by scores of 6-1 and 13-8 on Saturday at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (3-0) racked up 31 hits in the 18 innings of action and were led by RJ Perucki and John Welborn, who each registered five base knocks to pace the hit parade. Meanwhile, John Bormann drove in five runs and Wesley Cox registered a win and a save in a pair of relief appearances.
The Falcons (0-3) held a brief lead in each of the two contests, but UTSA answered in the following at-bat each time to take control.
The four-game series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Game #1: UTSA 6, Air Force 1
UTSA pounded out 15 hits and used a five-run fourth inning to defeat Air Force, 6-1, in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Perucki paced the Roadrunners at the plate with four base hits and an RBI, while Mike Warren was 2-for-5 to go along with two RBIs.
After Air Force scored a run in the top of the fourth, UTSA took advantage of two errors to push across five in the bottom of the frame, including a two-run single by Warren.
The Birds, who stranded 14 base runners, added one more tally in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Welborn led off the panel with a double to the right-center field gap and Riley Good followed with a single into right field. Good was thrown out trying to advance on the throw that was cut off, which allowed Welborn to score.
Cox (1-0) picked up the win in relief. The Rockwall native hurled 2.2 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while fanning a pair.
Meanwhile, Brock Hartson started for UTSA and allowed just one run and scattered six hits over 4.1 stanzas in his collegiate debut. Matt Walker came on to strike out two in the final two frames.
Game #2: UTSA 13, Air Force 8
The Roadrunners used two big innings and a 16-hit attack to hold off a late charge by the Falcons to complete the doubleheader sweep.
UTSA committed an error in the top of the opening frame that allowed Air Force to plate two runs. However, the Birds scored four times in their half of the panel, including two on Bormann's two-out double to take the lead for good.
The Roadrunners sent 10 batters to the plate and put up a seven-spot in the fourth to stretch the advantage to nine. Bormann, Horacio Correa III, Good, Daniel Rockett and Welborn all produced run-scoring hits during the big frame.
The Falcons cut the lead to four after scoring three times in the fifth and twice in the sixth.
However, UTSA picked up single tallies in the sixth and eighth to push the advantage to a half dozen.
Air Force capped the scoring in the ninth on Matt Thorne's run-scoring double.
Bormann, Correa III and Welborn each collected three hits and Bormann drove in five runs to go along with a pair of doubles.
Douglas Sefcik III (1-0) picked up the win in relief. The Tomball native allowed two runs and struck out three in 1.2 innings of work.
Meanwhile, Cox recorded his first save after fanning four over the final 3.1 stanzas.
