Defense lifts UTSA to sweep of Louisiana Tech on Saturday

RUSTON, La. — UTSA limited Louisiana Tech to a .091 hitting percentage and the Roadrunners swept the Lady Techsters by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-19 on Saturday at Thomas Assembly Center.

UTSA (17-8, 10-5 WAC) posted 51 digs and eight total blocks to thwart Louisiana Tech (3-24, 0-15 WAC).

Freshman Kylie Schott recorded a match-high six blocks, including three solo stuffs, while freshman Annie Kunes tallied a match-high 13 digs to pace the Birds.

Junior McKenzie Adams led the offensive charge with 11 kills, while junior Brandy Huskey handed out 25 assists to guide the Roadrunners to a .260 clip.

Maria Coelho passed out 23 assists and Fenix Calderon collected 11 digs to pace the Lady Techsters.

Senior Whitney Walls racked up a half dozen winners and helped UTSA take an early lead in the contest.

The Roadrunners broke a 21-all tie following a ball handling error by Louisiana Tech. UTSA then won the final three points after the Lady Techsters posted three consecutive attack errors to close out the frame.

The Birds rode a 7-0 run in the second stanza to take a commanding advantage into the locker room.

After Louisiana Tech won the opening point, UTSA rattled off a 7-0 spurt to take full control of the set. The Roadrunners increased their advantage to as much as 10 before claiming the nine-point victory.

Freshman Jordan Kotara netted seven kills and led the Birds to a .343 hitting percentage in the final set.

UTSA broke an 8-8 tie following a Lady Techster service error before pulling away. The Birds won the next three points to open up a four-point lead. Back-to-back winners by Kotara and sophomore Lauren Muenchow kept the Roadrunners advantage at four (16-12) and UTSA increased its lead to as much as seven in the set, thanks to three more winners from Kotara.

The Roadrunners will return to San Antonio to host Denver (14-11, 7-7 WAC) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8.
