ARLINGTON — UTSA recorded its eighth sweep of the season on Thursday night at UT Arlington (25-17, 25-19, 25-18).
Junior McKenzie Adams logged her conference-leading 16th double-double of the campaign with 21 kills and 14 digs to pace UTSA (16-8, 9-5 WAC). Junior Brandy Huskey handed out 38 assists and guided the Roadrunners to a .287 hitting percentage, while freshman Annie Kunes collected a match-best 15 digs.
Amanda Welsh tallied 19 assists to lead the Mavericks (8-18, 4-10 WAC), while Shelby Dickson and Amy Davault each netted 10 digs.
Adams posted seven winners and led the Birds to a .400 hitting percentage in the opening set.
UTSA jumped out to a 10-4 lead and cruised the rest of the way. The Roadrunners increased their advantage to as much as nine after Huskey set up an Adams kill and senior Brittney Malloy ended the stanza with a winner.
Adams topped her performance in the next frame with eight more kills and UTSA took a commanding 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Birds opened up a 9-5 advantage before a 3-0 spurt, which included a pair of winners by senior Whitney Walls, pushed the lead to seven. The Mavericks only were able to get as close as four (23-19) before UTSA closed out the stanza with a kill by sophomore Dempsey Thornton and a service ace by sophomore Becca Stark.
The Roadrunners hit .321 and Adams tallied six more winners to fuel a comeback win in the deciding panel to preserve the sweep.
After UT Arlington claimed an early 11-8 lead, the Birds used a 5-2 run to tie the set up at 13. The Roadrunners then seized the momentum by winning 10 of the next dozen points to claim an eight-point advantage. After the Mavericks won three of the next four tallies, UTSA ended the tilt on a Thornton winner.
UTSA will return to action on Saturday at Louisiana Tech (3-23, 0-14 WAC). First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
