SAN ANTONIO — Juniors McKenzie Adams and Brandy Huskey each recorded double-doubles and UTSA posted a four-set victory against New Mexico State (16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday at the Convocation Center.
Adams racked up a match-high 23 kills in addition to 18 digs for her team-leading 18th double-double of the season, as the Roadrunners (19-8, 12-5 WAC) moved into a second-place tie with the Aggies (19-9, 12-5 WAC) in the Western Athletic Conference standings.Meanwhile, Huskey netted her 16th double-double with a match-best 47 assists and 13 stops and freshman Annie Kunes recorded a match-high 20 digs.
Lauren Loerch paced New Mexico State with 15 kills, while Desiree Scott added 14.
The Aggies took the opening set after limiting UTSA to a .057 hitting percentage.
New Mexico State raced out to a 6-1 advantage and, after falling behind by as much as seven, the Birds battled back to within four (20-16) following a winner by Adams. However, the visitors went on a 5-0 run to close out the frame.
UTSA turned the tables in the second panel and held the Aggies to a .061 clip to even the contest.
Adams, who racked up six winners in the stanza, picked up three kills in the first 18 points to keep the Roadrunners even. UTSA then pulled away with a 10-3 run. The Aggies got as close as two (21-19), but a 4-1 Roadrunners run, which was fueled by back-to-back Adams winners, closed out the five-point win.
The Birds used a late charge in the third set to take control of the contest.
UTSA broke an 11-all tie with a kill by freshman Kylie Schott. After Desiree Scott notched a winner for New Mexico State, Adams put the Roadrunners ahead for good with a kill of her own. New Mexico State stayed within three the rest of the way, but Huskey set up senior Brittney Malloy for a winner to end the panel.
Adams racked up seven kills to help UTSA close out the match.
Senior Whitney Walls slammed home a winner to break an 11-all tie and the Roadrunners never looked back. The Birds used a 5-2 run to take a four-point lead and New Mexico State was able to cut the advantage in half (22-20), but UTSA won the final three points, including the match-clinching kill by Walls.
Prior to the match, the Roadrunners honored their senior class of Allie Bettinger, Malloy and Walls.
UTSA will close out the regular season at San Jose State (12-14, 8-8 WAC) on Thursday, Nov. 15. First serve is scheduled for 9 p.m. (CT).
