SAN ANTONIO — UTSA President Ricardo Romo has accepted a $10,000 challenge from UTSA donors and friends of the university David and Jennifer Spencer to promote student attendance at the final two home football games of the season (Nov. 10 vs. McNeese State/Nov. 24 vs. Texas State).
The "$10K for 10K Challenge" requires that a total of 10,000 UTSA students attend the final two home football games. If the challenge is met, $5,000 will be awarded to one lucky student while another $5,000 will be donated by the Spencers to the UTSA General Scholarship Fund.
Students and fans are asked to assemble in the south end zone following the Texas State game on Saturday. After both teams leave the field, fans will be invited onto the field to celebrate a great season and find out who the lucky $5,000 winner will be. “We want to drive student attendance and excitement by having a big celebration on the field after the last game of the season," David Spencer said. "Because students are our best ambassadors, we wanted to ramp up the fun and excitement. This challenge is our way of telling the students we love them, we need them and we want them at these games.”
Among other activities, the Spencers have supported the university through a gift of $1 million to the College of Engineering and another $250,000 to UTSA Athletics.
“The Spencers have been generous supporters of the academic and athletics missions at UTSA,” Dr. Romo said. “Since the football program began, they have been among the most energetic and loyal fans. We appreciate them greatly and look forward to meeting their challenge.”
UTSA students are admitted to home games free as part of their athletics fee charged each semester.
