Roadrunners cruise to sweep of UT Arlington

SAN ANTONIO — Junior McKenzie Adams netted her 11th double-double of the season and UTSA rolled to its second consecutive sweep (25-18, 25-7, 25-18) against UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon.

The Roadrunners' 18-point victory in the second panel set a program record for the largest margin in the rally scoring era (since 2008).

UTSA (12-5, 5-2 WAC) hit .357 in the match and limited the Mavericks (6-13, 2-5 WAC) to a .083 hitting percentage.

Adams racked up 15 digs and 11 kills, while junior Brandy Huskey guided the offense with a match-best 31 assists. Freshman Annie Kunes logged a match-high 24 digs and senior Whitney Walls chipped in with 10 winners.

UT Arlington received 18 assists from Amanda Welsh.

The Birds set the tone in the opening frame with a .350 hitting percentage, as Walls and sophomore Dempsey Thornton netted four kills apiece.

With the set tied at four, Walls posted a winner that put UTSA in the lead for good. The Roadrunners increased their advantage to as much as 10 before claiming a seven-point victory.

UTSA rolled through the second set after scoring 11 of the first dozen tallies. The Birds, who hit at a .379 clip in the stanza, closed out the frame with a 14-6 run.

The Mavericks opened the third set with a 7-4 lead before UTSA reeled off a 13-0 run to take full command. The Roadrunners won eight of the final 19 points to finish off the sweep.

UTSA will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 11, when it begins a four-match road trip at New Mexico State (11-5, 5-1 WAC).
