SAN ANTONIO — Senior Paola Valerio shot a one-under-par 71 on Sunday to lead UTSA to a two-over 290 and the Roadrunners are in fifth place after the first round of The Alamo Invitational, which is being played at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/6,428 yards).
Valerio shot even par with two birdies on the front nine before coming in with two more birdies and a one-under score. The Mexico City native’s total is good for a tie for 11th place.
Meanwhile, juniors Fabiola Arriaga and Taylor Newlin each carded 72s to tie for 15th place.
Arriaga fired three birdies on the front nine and was two-under par before a double-bogey and bogey on the back nine brought her to one-over. The Torreon, Mexico, native closed the round with a birdie on No. 18 to get back to even-par.
Newlin also carded three birdies through her first nine holes before another birdie on the back nine.
Freshman Brogan Townend shot a 75 and is tied for 39th, while junior Chelsea Bretcher carded a 76 to tie for 50th.
No. 9 Oklahoma leads the 15-team field, which features nine teams ranked in golfstat.com’s top 50, with a tournament-record round of 279 (-9). No. 31 SMU (286), No. 43 Tulane (287), No. 25 Texas A&M (289) and UTSA round out the top five.
The event continues on Monday with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m.
