Adams double-double leads UTSA to fourth consecutive victory

HOUSTON — Junior McKenzie Adams recorded her fifth double-double of the season and UTSA won its fourth consecutive match with a 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 27-25 victory at Houston on Friday night. The Roadrunners (6-2) now are off to their best start since 1988 when they won 11 of their first dozen contests.

Adams posted 20 digs and 17 kills in the contest, while junior Brandy Huskey handed out 39 assists and collected 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the fall. Senior Whitney Walls added 11 winners and freshman Annie Kunes chipped in with 16 digs.

The Cougars (1-6), who were limited to a .148 hitting percentage, received 15 kills from Katie Norris. Chandace Tryon added 13 winners and Natalie Keck posted a match-high 21 digs.

UTSA rolled to back-to-back set wins before Houston rallied to claim the third panel.

The Roadrunners opened the match with 15 kills on 40 swings with only one error for a .350 hitting percentage in the opening frame. Adams and Walls paced the Birds through the first two sets with 10 and nine kills, respectively.

After the Cougars extended the match with a victory in the third frame, UTSA rallied late from a two-point deficit to polish off the win.

The Birds trailed 19-17 before a kill by freshman Kylie Schott and back-to-back attack errors by Houston gave UTSA the lead. The teams then split the next 12 points before freshman Erin Foley set up Adams for the final winner of the night.

The Roadrunners, who improved to 3-1 against Conference USA opponents this fall, return to action on Monday, Sept. 10, in a 6:30 p.m. tilt at Houston Baptist (6-3).
