SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Liv Nyhegn put UTSA on top early in the second half, but Seattle rallied for the equalizer and the teams battled to a 1-1 tie on Friday night in a rainy Western Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
After a scoreless opening stanza, the Roadrunners (1-7-1, 0-0-1 WAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when Nyhegn scored off a rebound near the goal. Junior Anka Grotle started the play with a shot that bounced off the crossbar before Nyhegn popped the ball over the head of goalkeeper Brianna Smallidge and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
However, the lead did not last, as the Redhawks (5-5-1, 0-0-1 WAC) tied things up in the 80th minute. Stephanie Verdoia took a pass from just outside the penalty box and fired a shot that freshman goalie Katarina Pus appeared to stop, but the ball slid through her gloves and into the net.
UTSA nearly came away with a victory in regulation when junior Maria Jose Rojas slipped past the defense and beat Smallidge to her right, but the Santiago, Chile, native was whistled for being offsides.
Neither squad could come up with the game-winner in a pair of overtimes and the Roadrunners took their first draw since an Oct. 21, 2011, Southland Conference tilt against Lamar.
Pus logged five saves on the night, including one in extra time, while junior Laylla da Cruz led the Roadrunners with four shots.
UTSA will host Idaho (3-10, 0-1 WAC) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
