Miami (Fla.) edges UTSA, 1-0

MIAMI, Fla. — Freshman goalkeeper Katarina Pus recorded eight saves, but Kate Howarth’s goal in the 75th minute was enough to push Miami (Fla.) past UTSA, 1-0, on Friday night at Cobb Stadium.

For the second time in their last three tilts, the Roadrunners (1-7) held their opponent scoreless for the first 45 minutes of action. Despite holding an 11-1 edge in shots at the break, the Hurricanes (5-4-1) were unable to get one past Pus, whose eight stops were just one off her season high.

The contest remained scoreless until Howarth’s unassisted strike with a little more than 15 minutes remaining. The senior dribbled to the side of the penalty box before beating Pus from seven yards out for her third goal of the campaign.

Junior Maria Jose Rojas put a shot on goal in the 84th minute, but Hurricanes goalie Emily Lillard’s only save of the contest preserved the shutout, which was her third of the season. The Santiago, Chile, native and sophomore Liv Nyhegn led the Roadrunners with two shots apiece.

UTSA will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, when it hosts Seattle (4-4) in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
